The Beans

Life with Greyson & Fynnlee – 4 Months

In keeping with my screwed up timing this week, Fridays with Fynnlee is being pushed to Saturday.  I’ll get it together next week!

In it’s place we have their 4 Month Update!  They are currently 4 months, 11 days old but this picture was taken on the actual date.  Look at those chipmunk cheeks!  You can’t tell by this picture but they are just about the same length.

Every day I think “this is the best time yet!” and then a new day starts and it’s even better.  They just change so much and get more and more interactive.  Every day is my favorite day!width="225"

Doctors Appointment – 4m10d old

Our little man has a bit of a head cold…that’s why his coloring looks a little off.
1 month: 6lbs 12oz (0%)
2 months: 9 lbs 10 oz (6 %)
4 months: 15lbs 3oz (35%)
1 month: 19.5 inches (0 %)
2 months:  21 inches (1 %)
4 months: 24.25 (8%)
Head circumference: 43.5 cm (89 %)
Wearing:  3 & some 6 month clothes, Size 2 diapers

This guy is growing by leaps and bounds!  He still has a giant head but it’s not off-the-charts huge so that’s a good thing. We have an appointment at the end of the month with the Craniofacial Center at Children’s Hospital.  Greyson will definitely need a helmet due to the torticollis causing his head to be really misshaped.  But not to worry…we’re gonna slap some black and gold on that sucker and he’ll be the cutest little Steeler fan you’ve ever seen!

He’s hitting all of his developmental milestones and is overall pretty healthy.

1 month: 8lbs 12oz (38%)
2 months:  11lbs 6oz (66%)
4 months: 17lbs 6oz (92%)
1 month: 20.25 inches (14 %)
2 months: 22.25 inches (58%)
4 months: 24.75 inches (53%)
Head circumference:  42.0 cm (80%)
Wearing: 6 month clothes, Size 3 diapers

You read that correctly…92% for weight.  She gained 6 lbs in 2 months. We have a good eater on our hands, that’s for sure!  I asked if we should be concerned and the answer was “not at all”.

Fynn is going to be measured by the Craniofacial doctor as well, but our pediatrician didn’t think she will need a helmet.  She has a pretty big flat spot on the back of her head but it’s starting to round out. Lots more tummy time and suggestive positioning have helped.  I also bought a BenBat pillow for her to use when she lays on her back at daycare or in a swing/bouncer.

They had their 4 month shots…no big deal.  I cried more than they did.  We get to start solids “whenever we are ready” and it’s time to baby proof!  Jerry and I are going to be busy this weekend.

Fynnlee Ann

Just look at my little squish.  She is 17# of pure perfection.

Fynn has always been our champion sleeper. She’s been snoozing from 7pm to 5/5:30am since she was 2 1/2 months old. The dreaded 4 month sleep regression didn’t hit her too hard. Just a few wake ups here and there…but for the most part, she still loves her sleep. And don’t even think of messing with it. You want to see a pissed off Fynnlee…keep her awake past 7 pm. Sweetness & light turns into a Crankapotomus on a dime.

Does it appear that we have any issues with eating? Fynnlee downs 6 ozs when she wakes and again before bed. And she has three 8oz bottles during the day. We switched from Enfamil to Kirkland formula about a week ago without much issue. I love all things Costco!! I was a little nervous to mess with a good thing but I read a bunch reviews online that it was easily tolerated so we went for it. I don’t even think she noticed. Our bank account did though…$18 for 40oz vs $25 for 27oz. It was a no brainer for me. These kids are blowing through formula at an alarming pace.

* She’ll tolerate the bumbo now. Not for long…but she’ll do it.
* Her favorite toy is the Nuby Crab Teether
* She chatters non-stop. I never get sick of our conversations
* Wheels on the Bus and Good Morning to You are her favorite songs.
* She grabs at everything…my hair and necklaces are her favorites
* Still loves the playmat and the swing is her current baby gadget of choice

Greyson Paul

I could stare at this little dude all day long.  He is the most delightful baby in the history of ever.

G man didn’t handle the 4 month sleep regression as well as his big sister. But then again, he never really hit a stride of consistently sleeping though the night. We did drop his nightly feeding at around 3 1/2 months. His 2 am bottle became shushing, patting and replacing the pacifier. He adjusted quickly but around the last week in August, we noticed a shift into multiple wake-ups during the night. Lots of fussing and whining that was easily diffused with his bink and the mobile. He would quickly fall back to sleep but then be up again a short time later. One night it was every hour…on the hour. In hindsight, I think the cradle cap was making him itchy and uncomfortable and that, combined to the normal disruption that occurs around 4 months, made for some looooooooong nights for Jerry and I. We’ve recently had some good stretches though. 7-3:30/4:00 and I can’t really complain about that. I think once we introduce some solids and get this itchy-head-thing under control, we’ll be all golden.

Greyson takes in 2 six ounce bottles and 3 seven ounce bottles every day. Really, the only time he cries during the day is if he’s hungry. He had no issue transitioning to the Kirkland formula either.  Solids are gonna be so fun!

Torticollis update
We’ve been meeting with the physical therapist once a week and it’s really making such a difference. We do stretches at home and I’m super cognizant of how I position him. We always want him looking to the right. The range of motion with his neck has really improved and he will move his head from side to side without prompting. He does favor the left when he’s tired and I think it’s a comfort position for him. Its slow progress but we’ll get there!

* Rolled from tummy to back on 9/5
* Loves any song with do do do do do do in it. Manha Manha is a particular favorite.
* The Baby Einsten bendy ball will occupy him for hours
* Has made crazy huge improvements in tummy time.
* Loves to grab everything

Random Thoughts/observations/stuff

These Beans are best friends right now. I know it won’t be like this forever so I’m cherishing it while I can.  They are always reaching for each other or holding hands. It’s unbelievably adorable.

 007  006

I still can’t say enough good things about their daycare.  My kids are thriving and their teachers are a huge part of that.

This picture cracks me up.  Frick and Frack, I tell ya…

We take these Beans everywhere with us now and they are so well behaved.  Again, it won’t last forever, so we’re taking full advantage of it now!

I love being their Mom more than I ever thought possible.  I’m so proud of the little people they are. I know all Moms think their kids are awesome and amazing.  But mine really are.

And I still love Greyson’s outfit.

The Beans

Life with Greyson and Fynnlee – 3 Months

Everyone told me that each day gets a little better.  They were right.  Holy geez…these Beans are so much fun right now!

I know, I know.  Shut up.  How are 12 week old babies fun?  They are!  They laugh, and coo and speak their own little Bean language.  I was told by someone smarter then me to mimic their sounds and I’ve been doing just that.  Greyson likes to “Oooooo, Oooooo, Oooooo”…like a monkey.  So I do that.  And Fynnlee likes to squeal and yell “ACK!”  So I do that.

I sound like a lunatic but I don’t care. They think I’m hilarious.

They’re also grabbing all kinds of things (my hair, my shirt, my fingers) and kicking up a storm.  They will play under the activity mat for a loooooooong time, talking to Mr. Sunshine and swatting at Mr. Frog. (old picture, same concept)

They love to lay around naked (well, in a diaper…I have my limits)…and have a dance party.

They are such a perfect compliment to each other.  Fynnlee is the Yin to Greyson’s Yang.

Unofficial weight – 13 lbs

Unofficial length – 24 inches

Size 1 diapers.  Size 0-3 clothes (some 3-6 depending on the brand)

The race is on to catch up to Fynnlee!  He is currently just as long as she is but he’s behind her in weight by about a pound or so.

I die over this kid. He is so stinkin adorable.  And he looks like such a big boy in his bumbo…<sniff>

Mister has traded in his chicken legs for some deliciously chunky thighs.  And his hair is growing back.  He looks like he’s headed to college in this picture.

We put him down around 7ish (drowsy but awake) and most of the time, he’s asleep within 10 minutes.  But this child will entertain himself in his crib for up to an hour before crying out of boredom.  He wakes up anywhere from midnight to 2:30 to eat but he sucks down a bottle and is back in the crib within 15 minutes.  He’s back up again between 4-5 and generally is not a fan of going back to sleep afterwards.  We typically get a 30-45 minute nap in the morning and afternoon and one big 2-3 hour one mid day.

So not too shabby overall.  At the time this post went to press, we had a solid 7-4:30 nights sleep.  I can’t complain about that!

We made the switch from Newborn to Infant formula around week 11 and it was pretty seamless.  Greyson will consume around 30 – 35 oz of formula in a day.  I’m no longer feeding him at regular intervals.  He lets us know when he’s hungry by getting fussy and screaming for his food.  It’s generally every 2-3 hours.  But our little guy is putting on some serious weight and all of this chowing down is helping him to fill out.  And catch up to his sister.  He’s no longer my little peanut.

Big fan of shark week.

002 007

We had our evaluation with The Alliance for Infants and Toddlers and Greyson qualified for treatment with a mild case of Torticollis.  Developmentally, this was the only thing of concern for the therapist which is a great sign.

So we meet with a fabulous Physical Therapist once a week and she gives us stretches and suggestions for treatment.  Most of what I’m doing for him now is positioning him so he has to look away from the direction he favors.  For example, I make sure he’s on the far left side of his crib so that he has to turn his head to the right to see his mobile (he favors the left side).  And we do some positioning that will give him a gentle stretch on that tight side.

I’ve already seen marked improvement in just 2 weeks.  I’m so thankful that this program exists!

This little boy has completely stolen my heart.  He has the most delightful personality and remains the sweetest, most agreeable child I know.  That’s not to say he doesn’t have fussy times but I completely forget about them as soon as he flashes his signature smile.  We have special little games we play and I love that I can get him to laugh.  He has changed so much over this past month.  I swear, every morning when he wakes up, he’s gotten bigger!  And more handsome.

Greyson Paul, you are simply amazing.

Unofficial weight – 14.5 lbs

Unofficial length – 24 inches

Can squeeze into Size 1 diapers but Size 2 are going to be the norm within the next week.  Busting out of the 0-3m & mostly into 3-6m clothes

Seriously… I can’t even take the sweetness of this little girl.

That’s right, I said sweet.  She’s still spunky but there is a new sweetness to our little Miss and it just makes her even more irresistible.

Fynnlee also handled the transition from Newborn to Infant formula without issue.  She’s consumes about the same amount as Greyson, sometimes a little less.  Girlfriend has chosen sleep over eating at night and her naps are often twice as long as his.  We give her a mix of 4 and 6 oz at a clip.

Soooooooooooo big!  Ugh, those cheeks are so pinchable.

We love to joke about Fynnlee’s size but honestly, she’s pretty darn perfect.  She’s solid but she’s not super pudgy.  We just tend to compare her to Greyson, who is on the lanky side.  That belly…it’s fabulous!

Hates the bumbo, loves to sit up (and watch TV).  She is killing it in tummy time too.

002 027

Fynn is a champion sleeper.  She loves her naps and will crash for 3-4 hours in the afternoon.  And we had our first solid 10 hour overnight stretch a few days shy of 12 weeks and she’s been sleeping through the night ever since.  She is the happiest baby in the morning.  Honestly, this is how she wakes up every day.

And though she be but little, she is fierce…”

Forget that I thought that quote was from Beyonce, (embarrassing yet true) but wow does it sum up Fynnlee!  She is the perfect combination of determined, spirited and charming.  She will wrap you around her little finger in a split second. She wants to be independent but not at the cost of being all by herself. She does not want to miss out on anything! I can’t wait to watch her grow and see that little personality blossom even more.  Oh, this one is going to keep us on our toes.

Fynnlee Ann, you are the little girl I’ve always dreamed of.

Back to work

After 12 amazing weeks at home with my Beans, it is time to come back to work.  I am so fortunate that I got to spend so much time with them in these early days.  And I’m even more fortunate that their daycare is right at my office.  It’s a Bright Horizons care center and the staff is fantastic.  They made the transition back to the working world pretty easy on me.

Do my children look like they’re suffering?

grey fynn

They send us daily updates on the Beans and I get to pop in and visit a couple of times during the day.  All of the babies in their care are very content and happy.  In all of the times I’ve stopped by, there is rarely any crying!

They read books and make art projects and take trips outside in the stroller.  We made a great choice with Bright Horizons!

Crib Transition

Jerry We decided to move the babies out of our room into their nursery around 10 weeks.  Up to that point, they had slept in their rock n plays right next to my bed where I wanted them to stay forever.  So we kept to our bedtime routine of bath, swaddle, bottle, shush and placed them into their cribs.  Turn on their new mobiles and within 10 minutes, they were out.

What the hell was I worried about?

My babies are rockstars.  This is crazy easy…

BAM!  They woke up about every 2 hours for the first 2-3 nights.  And then it took forever to get them back to sleep.  WHAT HAVE WE DONE!?

I’m happy to report that we stuck it out and by the 4th night, they were sleeping soundly with one wake up a piece.  Jerry was right (don’t tell him I said that)…they love their cribs.  And by the 10th night, Fynnlee slept from 7-5 and Greyson from 7-2:30.  We are learning that babies need an adjustment period and we just need to have some patience.  They will eventually figure it out.

We are never going to let the babies sleep in our bed.  Ever.

Well, maybe just in the mornings.  For extra snuggles…

I know I’m biased but these are the most beautiful babies that ever existed.

Yep, he’s flipping me off over this outfit.  I don’t care…they’re adorable.

Pants are for suckers.

They’re liking their car seats a lot more these days…makes getting out and about for dinner or shopping much easier!

The Beans

Life with Greyson & Fynnlee – 2 Months

I hate to sound like a cliché, but TIME…SLOW DOWN!  The Beans are two months old.  And they are just the most amazing babies that ever lived.

While weeks 6 and 7 were rough (so. many. tears…theirs and mine), weeks 8 and 9 have been delightful!

Our salty little Fynnlee has turned the corner from a crankapotomus to a smiley, cooing, joyful little girl.  Before, I would put her down and there would be intense bouts of screaming. Girlfriend would yell for as long as you would let her and even when you picked her up, the yelling would often continue.  Didn’t matter what contraption we stuck her in, she was miserable.  I’m chalking it up to growing pains (and the six week sleep regression I read about).  Currently, she will entertain herself for 15-20 minutes before asking for some attention.  She loves looking out the window at clouds and is obsessed with mobiles.  She is content a lot of the time and I’m happy to report that my anxiety level has come down to manageable proportions.

She may be a diva but when she gives me this smile, all is forgiven.

happy princess

Greyson has always been a lovely baby.  For the most part he’s calm and quiet and is super happy to chill.  Weeks 6 and 7 brought a slight disruption to that demeanor but it was never miserable.  What the past 2 weeks brought us was tons of smiles and coos.  He definitely knows us know and will stare in your eyes forever.  He laughs and grunts and wiggles all the time.  He has started to prefer to be held but it’s nothing that is unmanageable and he will still chill out in the bouncer at times.  I bought this sling and it’s been one of my favorite baby things.  Greyson will nap in it and I love that I can keep him close and still have my hands free.  As we haven’t done much nursing, I like the extra bonding I get with my favorite little guy.

Seriously, those cheeks.

2 month doctor’s appointment – 6/22/15

“This is gonna suck, Fynnlee”

Weight: 1 month: 6lbs 12oz (0%) 2 months: 9 lbs 10 oz (6 %)
Height:  1 month: 19.5 inches (0 %) 2 months:  21 inches (1 %)
Head circumference: 40 cm (87 %)
Wearing:  0-3 month clothes, Size 1 diapers

My little guy gained almost 3 pounds in a month!  I’m so proud of him.  He’s gonna catch up to his sister before we know it.  He no longer feels like a feather when you hold him.

Weight:  1 month: 8lbs 12oz (38%)  2 months:  11lbs 6oz (66%)
Height:  1 month: 20.25 inches (14 %)  2 months 22.25 inches (58%)
Head circumference:  39 cm (83% percentile)
Wearing: 0-3 month clothes, Size 1 diapers

Baby girl is solid!  She’s officially a baby now, not a newborn.  Ugh, kills me.

The doctor’s appointment was uneventful with one exception.  Our little G man has a tendency to turn his head to he left (his left).  I noticed this the first week he came home and hoped that as he grew, he would flip from one side to the other.  No such luck.  Long story short…we’re looking at what is called TorticollisEssentially Torticollis is a condition in which the neck muscles cause the head to turn or rotate to the side. And treating torticollis that is present at birth involves stretching the shortened neck muscle. Passive stretching and positioning are used in infants and small children. In passive stretching, something is used to hold the body part in a certain position. This could be a device such as a strap, a person, or something else. These treatments are often successful, especially if they are started within 3 months of birth. ~ source

We had a spinal x-ray to rule out spine issues and it came back normal.  Fortunately, Allegheny County has a wonderful service through the Alliance for Infants and Toddlers, which offers early intervention and will assist us with physical therapy.  Greyson may have to wear a neck brace for a bit or a helmet (as the constant left side head turn is causing a flat head situation). But the bottom line is that this is not life threatening and he’ll eventually be just fine.

Well I made it 8 weeks.  And now, I’m officially finished with breastfeeding. I took a week to wean myself to spare the intense pain of going cold turkey. I stopped pumping for a week and just gradually cut down on my nursing sessions with Fynn.  We had our last nursing session on her 2 month birthday.

I shed a couple of tears and then gave myself a pep talk on making it as long as we did.  I’m proud I was able to provide breastmilk to my babies in their early days…and I know they will continue to thrive on formula.

Greyson has been an eating machine, sometimes drinking 8 oz in a sitting.  I don’t know where he puts it!  He very rarely spits up afterwards so it’s all being digested. Most meals are 4-5 oz though.  Fynnlee was nursing for 15 minutes or will take 4-5 oz from a bottle.  And they’re eating 6-7 times a day.  Both babies tolerate Emfamil Newborn formula very well and our pediatrician had the formula Rep send us 2 cases of Newborn and Infant formula.  Score!

Bottles for days!

Sleep is getting better.  Fynnlee is sleeping 6, 7 or even 8 hour stretches over night and Greyson will give us a good 5 to 6 hours at a clip.  I know as he gains weight, he’ll catch up to her and I am hoping we’re down to one nightly wakeup by the time I return to work.  They take 30-45 minute morning and afternoon naps during the day with one long 2-3 hour nap mid day.  For their long stretch, I put them in the rock and play in our room just like they sleep at night and I’ve noticed they sleep much, much better than if they are chilling in the living room.

Bedtime is between 7-8 and our routine is becoming very effective.  Bath, swaddle, shush and white noise.  They are still sleeping in our room but we’ll be moving them to the nursery within the next two weeks (Lord, give me strength).

We’re using up the Huggies we stockpiled and then we’re never buying them again. The Kirkland brand diapers have been pretty decent and I’m still a fan of Pampers and Up & Up.

We are down to 3-4 major poops a day.  This is pretty nice!  Lots and lots of wet diapers and we’ve found the Huggies absorb liquid just fine. Both Jerry and I got pooped on this past month.  A couple of diaper explosions and one situation of pooping mid-diaper change.  Gross.

Road Trip!

Babies took their first trip just before their two month birthday.  We flew on a direct flight from Pittsburgh to Florida and I’m happy to report that they were rockstars!  The flight down to FLA wasn’t full so they could sleep in their carseats next to us.  But we had to hold them on the way home.  They slept for 85% of the time.

And we’re off!

White noise on the plane is a godsend!

Filler ‘er up before takeoff!

I’ll do a separate post on our flying experience.

Aunt Steph and the Grandparents were very excited to see the Beans so they dressed accordingly.

Every day I am more amazed at these two little beings.  I love being their Mom and I can’t wait to see what Month 3 has in store for us!
